Key Elements of Palliative Care for Care Workers

Overview

This seven-week course is designed to equip care workers with the essential knowledge and skills to provide compassionate, confident, and person-centred palliative care. Participants will explore the core principles of palliative care, effective communication, symptom management, and emotional support, while learning to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.

The course also includes a dedicated session on dementia, helping care workers understand the unique challenges and approaches required when supporting individuals with dementia at the end of life.

Through a mix of interactive learning, practical examples, and reflection, delegates will gain the confidence and competence to enhance the quality of care for the people they support.

The 7 sessions will cover:

  • Introduction to palliative & end of life care & Attitudes to death & dying
  • Physical aspects of care at end of life
  • Symptom management
  • Advance Care Planning and Teamwork
  • Communication skills
  • Overview of dementia & what happens as dementia progresses
  • Spirituality & Loss, grief & bereavement

All sessions are mandatory.

Learning Objectives

Introduction to Palliative Care

Understand the core principles, values, and philosophy of palliative care and how it differs from general care.

Communication in Palliative Care

Develop effective communication skills to engage with individuals, families, and colleagues during sensitive end-of-life conversations.

Symptom Recognition and Management

Identify common physical and emotional symptoms in palliative care and apply strategies to support comfort and wellbeing.

Person-Centred Care Approaches

Apply person-centred care principles to ensure care is tailored to individual preferences, needs, and cultural backgrounds.

Emotional and Psychological Support

Recognise the emotional impact of end-of-life care on individuals and families and provide appropriate support to promote wellbeing.

Working in a Multidisciplinary Team

Understand the roles of different healthcare professionals and collaborate effectively to deliver comprehensive palliative care.

Overview of Dementia in Palliative Care

Understand how dementia affects individuals at the end of life, including communication challenges, symptom management, and strategies for providing compassionate, person-centred dementia care.
