Session Overview

Multidisciplinary team meetings in the community are a regular feature in the provision of palliative care and involve a range of professionals. Yet, their purpose and best format are not necessarily well understood or well structured. (Borgstrom et al 2021)

This half day study event will explain some of the main values of the MDT meeting and how they may operate in terms of their setup, professionals involved and general order of business. It will also offer input for future practice.

Through a simulated approach, it will provide the participant with an opportunity to be involved in an MDT, working through set scenarios and examples of both good and bad practice.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course the learner will be able to:

  • Appreciate the benefits of palliative MDT meetings
  • Discuss the reported barriers
  • Recognise the case for change
  • Optimise the MDT membership
  • Debate how to improve the effectiveness of MDT’s by:
    1. using tools to identify end of life patients
    2. using an End of Life Register to prioritise patients
    3. using Electronic Palliative Care Communication System (EPaCCS)
