Enhancing Clinical Practice: Symptom Management in Palliative Care

Event Overview

Symptom Management is a practical, evidence-informed study day designed to enhance confidence in recognising, assessing and managing common symptoms experienced by people approaching the last weeks and days of life. Focusing on both pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches, the day explores the holistic management of pain, agitation, breathlessness, nausea and vomiting, alongside common medication-related side effects such as constipation.

Through expert-led teaching and discussion, attendees will consider how timely, person-centred symptom management can improve comfort, dignity and quality of life. The study day emphasises holistic assessment and multidisciplinary working to ensure care is tailored to the individual across a range of care settings.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the study day, participants will be able to:

  • Recognise and discuss common symptoms experienced people in the last weeks and days of life.
  • Assess and manage symptoms using both pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches appropriate to their clinical role.
  • Understand the management of pain, agitation, breathlessness, nausea, vomiting and medication-related side effects, including constipation.
  • Apply a holistic, person-centred approach to symptom assessment and management.
  • Consider the impact on the quality of life for patients and those important to them.
  • Identify when specialist advice or referral may be required to optimise symptom control.
