Session Overview

This ½ day event will focus on DNACPR decision making in clinical practice. Sessions will relate to 4 key areas; Legal and Policy Framework, Ethical Decisions, Communication, Shared Decision making.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the symposium, you will be able to:

  • Describe the current legal standards and national guidance relating to DNACPR decisions, including relevant case law (e.g., Tracey and Winspear).
  • Understand the application of the Mental Capacity Act 2005 in DNACPR decision-making.
  • Recognise legal duties regarding documentation, review, and involvement of patients and families.
  • Explore the ethical principles that underpin DNACPR decisions, including autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence, and justice.
  • Reflect on how ethical dilemmas arise in practice and how they can be addressed.
  • Consider the impact of personal and professional values on ethical decision-making.
  • Apply shared decision-making principles to DNACPR conversations in a patient-centred manner.
  • Understand the roles of patients, relatives, and healthcare professionals in collaborative planning.
  • Identify and manage barriers to meaningful shared decision-making in clinical settings.
  • Use effective and compassionate communication techniques when discussing DNACPR with patients and families.
  • Navigate challenging conversations, including conflict, disagreement, or emotional distress.
  • Acknowledge and incorporate individual values, beliefs, and cultural considerations in end-of-life care discussions.
