St Luke’s Cheshire Hospice with The End of Life Partnership facilitated a Masterclass in Namaste Care on Thursday 11 June 2015 at the Daresbury Hotel, near Warrington. The day was attended by almost 80 delegates from a variety of backgrounds and included both professional staff and carers.

Salli Jeynes, CEO from the End of Life Partnership opened the Masterclass with a reminder that 850,000 people are currently diagnosed with dementia in the UK, which is set to rise to 2 million people by 2050. Salli spoke about the severe impact on quality of life for those with dementia and those around them.

Joyce Simard, founder of Namaste Care opened her sessions with an invitation – “Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path…and leave a trail” (Ralph Waldo Emerson). Joyce gave an introduction to the origins of the Namaste Care programme and moved through to the present day where programmes are being further developed in the UK, United States, Australia, the Netherlands and Canada. Joyce spoke about many examples from the Namaste Care programme and led us through an emotional, inspirational and often humorous journey.

The second keynote was Lourdes Colclough, Namaste Care Manger, St Joseph’s Hospice and Hope for Home. Lourdes spoke about her role in the development of a home care Namaste programme. The innovative programme has supported volunteers to provide Namaste sessions in the home of the person with dementia. Lourdes used several case studies to show the powerful impact of this work.

The morning ended with a discussion session where the delegates had the opportunity to ask questions of the speakers.

Some of the comments from delegates were…

I would like to see some of the staff at my wife’s care home to know what was said, I used to do my best to give them the message and others
Very thought provoking and quite emotional at times, I had no idea what to expect and was blown away by the effectiveness of something so simple, will definitely include some of the ideas into my work
Absolutely amazing, incredibly inspiring, very useful, I can’t wait to start Namaste, I wasn’t sure what to expect but I’m fascinated, will begin Namaste in our care home
I am a GP and feel sure this could help reduce unplanned admissions – will discuss back at practice
