Crafting Memories

Do you have memories that are important to you? What would you like to remember in the future? Is there something that you have not yet done, but would like to?

The Cheshire Living Well, Dying Well Partnership’s Crafting Memories sessions use creative expression to encourage people to think about, talk about and take action in relation to life, age, death and loss. The sessions bring together people of different backgrounds and generations in a relationship centred way to encourage conversation.

Memory Boxes

Our popular Memory Box session consists of decorating a shoebox, tin or gift box with craft materials to make it personal. The contents of boxes contain items, which remind you of specific special memories. This session was conducted recently with a group of people with dementia and their family carers In Tytherington. The atmosphere and the response was wonderfully enriching and emotional. Quotes from participants included:

“The session was very good. Great selection of craft stuff to use. Really engaged with my mother.”

“The session was interesting and fun and got people talking.”

 Other examples of crafting possibilities:

"A "Cothing" "Buckets"
A family photo tree. Clothing turned into a keepsake.  A summer bucket list.

Personal Experience

Crafting allows endless possibilities to suit everyone’s needs and allows freedom of expression. Frances Underhill, a Cheshire Living Well, Dying Well Partnership team member, personally experienced the benefits of using crafts to support her young children through the grieving process when their Grandma died. Frances says:

“The children drew pictures of their Grandma smiling and some looking sad. Messages were written, which were taken to the funeral. A balloon was even sent to Grandma. The creative process really helped the children to understand the loss and made them feel part of what was happening.”

Frances’ experience illustrates that the process as much as the end result can be therapeutic. Crafting can provide opportunities to explore our own life experiences, capture special memories and create a legacy.
