  • Suitable for: Health and social care professionals working in the community, hospitals and care homes. The course assumes attendees will already have a basic understanding of the Mental Capacity Act (2005).

Session Overview

 The 3 hour interactive face to face session will cover:

  •  Shared decision-making: The rights of the person with dementia, their family, LPA and professionals
  • The ethics and law of withdrawing and withholding treatment at end of life.
  • Is it ethical to lie to a person with dementia

Health Education England Learning Outcomes

By the end of the session, the participant will be able to:

  • Demonstrate awareness and understanding of the legal status and implications of the Advance Care Planning process in accordance with the provisions of the Mental Capacity Act 2005
  • Explain relevant legislation and guidance, for example, the Mental Capacity Act (2005) and the Mental Health Act (2007) as they relate to end of life care.
  • Demonstrate awareness and understanding of the legal status and implications of the Advance Care Planning process in accordance with the provisions of the Mental Capacity Act 2005
  • Demonstrate understanding of professional and legal frameworks with regard to patient consent, confidentiality, autonomy, advance directives, mental health legislation, organ donation, communicable disease notification, legal aspects related to patients’
  • Be aware of dilemmas that may arise between the duty of care and an individual’s rights and carers wishes.
